About Ruth

 

Ruth Rowland is an award-winning hand lettering artist, calligrapher, mapmaker and illustrator based in London. She has worked globally for a wide range of clients from the music, advertising and publishing industries. Her impressive client list includes Coca Cola, BBC, Starbucks, Virgin Records, Marks & Spencer, Heathrow Airport, Hotel Chocolat, Country Living Magazine, Penguin Random House and Neiman Marcus and The Folio Society, amongst many others.

Ruth studied for a Bachelors Degree in illustration at Newcastle Upon Tyne and went on to study a Masters Degree in hand drawn lettering, calligraphy and experimental typography at Central St Martins School of Art, London. She is an experienced visiting lecturer and has taught masterclasses in lettering and gilding at The British Library and The Wallace Collection, London. 

She is known for her bespoke hand lettering, calligraphy and handwriting for books, magazines, albums and posters. Briefs range from one word or phrase, to blocks of copy or full colour illustration. She enjoys using her hand lettering and image-making skills to create word-heavy illustration - seamlessly combining word and image to bring text to life.
