"A little girl named Lalita lives in a small village in southern India. She comes from a poor region in the north of the country. There, her mother cleaned out farmers' toilets, and her father hunted rats. Her parents worked in undignified jobs, reserved for the Untouchables, members of their community. Both her parents dreamed of a better future for their daughter. So they embarked on a long journey to settle in this village in southern India. Unfortunately, Lalita's father had to leave again to find work. Her mother, meanwhile, became very ill. Lalita was taken in by cousins…They didn't keep their promise to send Lalita to school so she could study and have a better life later. The young girl has to work in her cousins' restaurant from morning till night. But a chance encounter will change everything. The book tells the story of Lalita's struggle to go to school. With Léna's help, the young girl begins to learn to read. Soon, other girls who also want to succeed find their way in life. A school could be built for the neighborhood children… The book is adapted for young readers who will become aware of the privilege of going to school. It also highlights the reality that in some countries, children have to work instead of learning and developing, in order to grow up better. The story is honest and moving, raising awareness of these still-relevant conditions. The illustrations remain gentle and luminous, with soft and rather simple lines. The Kite, or Lalita's School, is a beautiful children's book published by Grasset. It's a story that raises questions about the plight of children around the world who are denied access to education. A touching story, also full of hope for those who are trying to change things". Éditons Grasset
